Genesis Essentia Concept

The Genesis Essentia Concept, unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, was a bold declaration of intent from Hyundai's premium Genesis brand. This all-electric grand tourer combined striking design with cutting-edge technology, signaling that Genesis intended to compete at the very highest levels of the luxury automotive world.

The Essentia's design, led by Genesis design chief Luc Donckerwolke (formerly of Lamborghini and Bentley), is dramatic and purposeful. The long hood, ultra-low roofline at just 1,260 mm, and butterfly doors create an unmistakable silhouette. The front features Genesis's signature Crest Grille reinterpreted as a lattice of light, while the rear showcases a full-width LED light bar.

Construction centers on a lightweight carbon fiber monocoque — a technology borrowed from Formula 1 and hypercars. This keeps weight down despite the battery pack, enabling the claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds from the multi-motor electric powertrain producing over 550 hp.

The interior is a showcase of future luxury: handcrafted leather surfaces, a curved glass instrument panel that extends the width of the cabin, and materials selected for their tactile quality rather than mere visual impact. Genesis described it as 'Athletic Elegance' — their design philosophy distilled to its purest form.

The Essentia generated significant acclaim at its debut, with many calling it the most beautiful concept car of 2018. Genesis subsequently explored production feasibility, and while a direct production version has not materialized, elements of the Essentia's design language have influenced subsequent Genesis models including the G80, GV70, and the GV60 electric crossover.

As a concept, the Essentia represents a pivotal moment in Genesis's journey from a Hyundai sub-brand to a standalone luxury marque with genuine design credibility.
