Nissan Stagea 260RS Autech

The 2000 Nissan Stagea 260RS Autech is one of the most fascinating and unique performance cars to emerge from Japan's golden era of automotive engineering. Created by Autech Japan, Nissan's specialist vehicle subsidiary, the 260RS was essentially a Nissan Skyline GT-R drivetrain installed into a Stagea station wagon body, creating a high-performance family car with genuine GT-R credentials.

The 260RS shared the R33 GT-R's complete powertrain: the legendary RB26DETT 2,568cc twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, and the five-speed manual transmission. Official output was 280 horsepower, in line with the gentleman's agreement, but actual power was understood to be considerably higher. The engine retained the same tuning potential as the GT-R's unit, responding well to modifications.

What made the 260RS remarkable was that it was not merely an engine swap performed by a private shop. This was a factory-supported conversion performed by Autech Japan, with full Nissan warranty support and the quality control that implied. The conversion involved extensive modifications to the Stagea's engine bay, transmission tunnel, and rear subframe to accommodate the GT-R components.

The ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system operated identically to the R33 GT-R's, defaulting to rear-wheel drive and engaging front-wheel drive as traction demands required. Combined with the wagon's slightly higher center of gravity and longer wheelbase, this created a driving experience that was subtly different from the GT-R but no less engaging. The extra weight of the wagon body actually improved traction in wet conditions.

The suspension was based on the Stagea's multi-link front and rear arrangement, revised with GT-R-specification springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars. Brembo brakes from the R33 GT-R provided stopping power appropriate to the car's performance. The result was a car that could carry a family and their luggage at speeds that would embarrass most sports cars.

The interior featured the standard Stagea's practical layout with additional Autech-specific touches. The driving position was typical wagon — slightly higher than a sedan — but the GT-R instrument cluster and controls reinforced the car's performance identity. The rear seats folded to create a substantial cargo area, making the 260RS genuinely practical for daily use.

Autech produced approximately 1,734 examples of the 260RS over the model's production run, making it rare but not impossibly scarce. The car was sold exclusively in Japan, and most examples accumulated significant mileage as they were used as daily drivers rather than garage queens.

Today, the Stagea 260RS is one of the most desirable JDM imports among enthusiasts who want GT-R performance with genuine practicality. As these cars become eligible for importation to various countries, demand has increased substantially. The 260RS represents a uniquely Japanese approach to the performance car — one that prioritizes engineering cleverness and versatility over outright aggression.

Confirm the car is a genuine 260RS through the Autech build plate and chassis number. The RB26 engine should be inspected as per GT-R standards. Check the ATTESA system for proper operation. The wagon body can hide rust in the rear cargo area and around the tailgate. Manual transmission and clutch condition should be verified. Many examples have high mileage from daily use — this is normal but affects value.

Built by Autech Japan, Nissan's specialist subsidiary. Standard Stageas were modified at Autech's facility to receive the complete R33 GT-R drivetrain. Production ran from 1997 to 2001, with approximately 1,734 units completed.
