Suzuki Jimny JB23W

The Suzuki Jimny is one of the most beloved and capable small vehicles ever produced — a tiny kei-class 4WD that has been conquering terrain that would defeat vehicles many times its size since 1970. The third-generation JB23W Jimny (the Japanese kei version with the turbocharged 660cc engine) distilled the off-road formula to its purest essence: body-on-frame construction, part-time four-wheel drive with a proper low-range transfer case, rigid axles front and rear, and a curb weight under 1,000 kg. This combination gave the Jimny extraordinary off-road capability — its tiny dimensions and light weight allowed it to go places that full-size off-roaders couldn't physically fit, while the ladder frame and rigid axles provided the articulation needed for serious terrain. The kei-spec turbocharged three-cylinder engine produced a modest 64 horsepower but was perfectly adequate given the Jimny's featherweight construction. In Japan, the Jimny is used by forestry workers, mountain rescue teams, and rural residents who need a vehicle that can handle any conditions. Worldwide, the Jimny has developed an enormous cult following among enthusiasts who appreciate its honest, no-frills approach to automotive design.

Check for off-road damage underneath — many Jimnys have been used hard. Ladder frame can rust in cold climates. The turbo three-cylinder engine is robust but check for turbo bearing play. Part-time 4WD hubs should engage and disengage cleanly. Front rigid axle U-joints wear. JDM models have 660cc engine; exports have 1.3 or 1.5L versions.

The Jimny has been in continuous production since 1970, with over 3 million units sold worldwide. The JB23W was the kei-class version for Japan with a 660cc engine; export versions received larger engines.
