Nissan Pulsar GTI-R N14
The Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (also sold as the Sunny GTI-R in some markets) was one of the most ferocious hot hatches ever built. Created as a Group A rally homologation special, the GTI-R crammed the SR20DET 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and ATTESA all-wheel-drive system into the compact Pulsar N14 body. The result was explosive: 227 horsepower in a car weighing just 1,220 kg, with all-wheel drive traction to deploy every last horse. The performance was genuinely shocking — 0-60 in under 5.5 seconds from a car that looked like a shopping runabout. On the rally stages, the GTI-R proved competitive against the established Lancia Delta and Toyota Celica GT-Four, but Nissan's WRC campaign was short-lived. The road car, however, became legendary among Japanese performance car enthusiasts. The SR20DET engine was immensely tunable, with many owners extracting 400+ hp with bolt-on modifications. Today, the GTI-R is recognized as one of the great homologation specials — a precursor to the Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru Impreza WRX philosophy of enormous performance from a compact package.
The SR20DET engine is robust and well-supported by the aftermarket. Check turbo health and boost pressure. AWD system needs regular maintenance — transfer case and viscous coupling. Many have been modified — verify specification. Rust in sills and wheel arches. ATTESA system leaks possible.
Built as a Group A rally homologation special. The SR20DET engine was later used in the Silvia S14/S15. ATTESA AWD system was a simpler version of that used in the Skyline GT-R. Rally career was limited but included WRC entries. Only 14,613 built.
