Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport 4x4

The Jeep Cherokee XJ is a legend in the off-road world. Designed by AMC's team under the guidance of Roy Lunn, it was revolutionary: a unibody SUV with solid axles that could go anywhere a traditional body-on-frame 4x4 could, while being lighter, more fuel-efficient, and better to drive on pavement. The 4.0-liter inline-six was the heart of the XJ — smooth, torquey, and seemingly indestructible. The Cherokee's compact dimensions made it equally capable on tight trails and in parking garages. It was the template for the modern SUV and remained in production for 18 years with only minor changes. Today, the XJ is revered by overlanders and off-road enthusiasts as one of the all-time greats.

$5,000 – $20,000

1997-2001 models are most refined. The 4.0L I6 is essential — avoid 2.5L and early V6 models. Check for the 'cracked exhaust manifold' — it's almost universal. Floor pan rust is the biggest concern. The Aisin AW4 automatic is robust. NP231 transfer case is adequate; NP242 is better for full-time 4WD. These are the best-value off-roader you can buy.

The XJ Cherokee was produced for an remarkable 18 years (1984-2001) with continuous improvements but the same basic design. Over 2.5 million were sold worldwide. The 4.0L I6 replaced the earlier 2.8L V6 in 1987 and transformed the Cherokee's character.
