Matra Bagheera S

The Matra-Simca Bagheera represented a unique approach to affordable sports car design, featuring a central driving position flanked by two passenger seats in a three-across configuration rarely seen outside of the McLaren F1. Designed by Jacques Nocher, the Bagheera utilized a mid-mounted Simca engine behind the cabin driving the rear wheels, wrapped in a fiberglass body over a steel backbone chassis. The S model featured the larger 1.4-liter version of Simca's Poissy engine producing 84 hp, giving adequate if not thrilling performance. What made the Bagheera special was its handling balance thanks to the mid-engine layout and relatively light weight under 2,000 lbs. The three-abreast seating meant the driver could bring two friends along for spirited drives, making it more practical than traditional two-seaters. The angular, wedge-shaped styling was distinctive and modern for its era. While not particularly fast, the Bagheera offered engaging handling, practical capacity, and quirky French character at an affordable price. Today it's remembered as one of Matra's more successful road cars and an interesting footnote in sports car history.

Rust is the primary enemy - check the steel backbone chassis thoroughly as the fiberglass body hides structural corrosion. Look for corrosion where steel and fiberglass meet. Mechanical parts are largely Simca/Talbot components which can still be sourced. Check for accident damage as fiberglass repairs may hide structural issues. Original interior trim can be worn and replacement parts are scarce. An active Matra enthusiast community exists in Europe.

The Bagheera was assembled at Matra's Romorantin facility using mechanical components from Simca. The partnership with Simca (later Chrysler Europe) provided economies of scale. Production ended in 1980 when it was replaced by the Murena. Many Bagheeras rusted badly due to galvanic corrosion between the steel chassis and fiberglass body.
