Ford Torino Cobra

The 1971 Ford Torino Cobra represented the last hurrah for unrestricted Detroit muscle before emissions regulations and insurance surcharges killed the high-performance era. Based on Ford's NASCAR-winning Torino platform, the Cobra featured aggressive styling with blacked-out grille, functional hood scoop, and distinctive striping. The top engine option was the legendary 429 Cobra Jet V8 rated at 370 gross horsepower but capable of much more. With competition suspension, heavy-duty cooling, and close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, the Torino Cobra was a legitimate street terror and the last of Ford's truly aggressive muscle cars.

$45,000 – $95,000

Verify correct 429 engine with casting numbers - many swaps exist. Ram Air hood should be functional. Competition suspension package desirable. Check for rust in rear quarters and floor pans. Documented 429 CJ or SCJ cars command premium. Front disc brakes standard. Values increasing as final big-block muscle Fords.

1971 was final year for high-compression engines before emission controls and net horsepower ratings arrived. Only 3,054 Torino Cobras built. 429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engines were NASCAR-derived. Production shifted to low-compression engines in 1972. Cobra was performance-oriented trim of Torino lineup.
