Fiat 508S Balilla Sport

The 508S transformed Fiat's humble Balilla economy car into a genuine sports machine through weight reduction, improved aerodynamics, and careful tuning. Various coachbuilders including Touring, Zagato, and Ghia created distinctive lightweight bodies that emphasized the car's competition potential while maintaining the mechanical simplicity that made the standard Balilla so popular. With less than 1000cc and only 36 horsepower, the 508S nevertheless achieved remarkable success in small-capacity racing classes throughout Italy and Europe. This model demonstrated that sporting character didn't require massive displacement or complex engineering, inspiring generations of small Italian sports cars.
