Rivian R1T Adventure

The 2022 Rivian R1T Adventure is a vehicle that would have seemed like science fiction just a decade ago: a full-size electric pickup truck with four independent motors, air suspension capable of raising the body to 14.9 inches of ground clearance, and a built-in camp kitchen that slides out from between the cab and bed. It represents the most radical rethinking of what a truck can be since the original pickup concept emerged a century ago, and it does so while delivering performance numbers that would embarrass most sports cars.

Rivian, founded by R.J. Scaringe in 2009 and backed by major investments from Amazon and Ford, delivered the first R1T in September 2021, beating Tesla's Cybertruck and Ford's F-150 Lightning to market and earning the distinction of producing the first electric pickup truck from a new American automaker. The company's purpose-built factory in Normal, Illinois, occupies a former Mitsubishi plant and was redesigned from the ground up for EV production.

The R1T's quad-motor powertrain is its defining technical achievement. Each wheel gets its own permanent magnet motor, allowing for precise, independent torque vectoring that gives the truck extraordinary traction in every conceivable condition. With 835 combined horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque, the R1T can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.0 seconds, a figure that puts it in supercar territory despite weighing nearly 6,800 pounds. More impressively, the individual wheel control enables a tank-turn capability, where the truck can spin in place by rotating the left and right wheels in opposite directions.

Off-road, the R1T is remarkably capable. The air suspension offers five ride height settings, with the maximum providing nearly 15 inches of ground clearance for serious trail work. Water fording depth is rated at over 3 feet. The quad-motor system provides a form of electronic locking differential far more sophisticated than any mechanical locker, and the low-mounted battery pack keeps the center of gravity low enough to resist body roll even on severely uneven terrain. A front recovery tow hook, underbody skid plates, and all-terrain tires come standard on the Adventure package.

The Adventure trim level, which became the core offering, includes a distinctive feature that captured imaginations worldwide: the Camp Kitchen. This optional accessory slides out from the gear tunnel, a unique storage space between the cab and bed that is exclusive to the R1T's skateboard platform. The kitchen includes a two-burner induction cooktop powered by the truck's battery, a sink with a 4-gallon water tank, and integrated storage for pots, pans, cups, and utensils. It is a feature that perfectly encapsulates Rivian's vision of the truck as an outdoor adventure companion.

The cabin is modern and restrained, with a 16-inch driver display and a 15.6-inch center touchscreen running Rivian's in-house software. Materials include responsibly sourced wood, recycled textiles, and vegan leather options. The bed includes an integrated tonneau cover, a 120V outlet, compressed air for inflating tires, and a sliding bed platform for camping. Towing capacity is rated at 11,000 pounds, competitive with mid-range conventional trucks.

The Rivian R1T Adventure is significant not just as an electric vehicle or a truck, but as proof that the EV transition can create entirely new categories of vehicles that simply could not exist with internal combustion power. No gas engine could independently power four wheels with millisecond-precision torque adjustments. No conventional drivetrain could enable a tank turn. The R1T does not merely replace the gas truck; it reimagines what the concept of a truck can be, and it does so with an infectious sense of adventure that has earned it a passionate following.

Check for software update history, as Rivian has addressed early issues via OTA. Inspect for panel alignment, which was variable on early production units. Verify battery health and charging history. The Large battery pack is the most common and versatile. Quad-motor configuration is the performance option; dual-motor became available later at lower price. Camp Kitchen is a desirable option. Check for any suspension air spring issues.

First deliveries began September 2021 (Launch Edition). The Adventure trim became the standard offering in 2022. The Large battery pack (135 kWh) provides an estimated 314 miles of range. A smaller Standard battery and a Max battery option were later introduced. Rivian manufactures all vehicles at its Normal, Illinois facility.
