Rivian R1S Adventure
The Rivian R1S emerged from a startup company founded in 2009 with a vision to create electric vehicles purpose-built for adventure. While many EV startups have focused on luxury sedans or urban commuter vehicles, Rivian deliberately targeted the outdoor enthusiast market with vehicles designed to travel far from pavement without sacrificing the performance and technology advantages of electric powertrains.
The R1S is the SUV variant of Rivian's skateboard platform, sharing its architecture with the R1T pickup truck that preceded it to market. In its flagship quad-motor configuration, the R1S produces 835 horsepower and 908 lb-ft of torque through four independent electric motors, one powering each wheel. This configuration enables precise torque vectoring that can send exactly the right amount of power to each wheel instantaneously, providing traction control capabilities that would be impossible with a conventional drivetrain.
The air suspension system provides up to 14.4 inches of ground clearance in its highest setting, with a wading depth of over three feet, figures that exceed many purpose-built off-road vehicles with conventional drivetrains. The system can also lower the vehicle to approximately 9 inches for highway efficiency, reducing aerodynamic drag and improving range. Eight different ride height settings are available, each optimized for specific driving scenarios from parking garage entry to rock crawling.
Range from the large 135 kWh battery pack is estimated at approximately 321 miles on the EPA cycle, a figure that makes genuine adventure travel practical without constant charging anxiety. The Rivian Adventure Network of DC fast chargers, while still expanding, provides charging speeds up to 200 kW, enabling an 80% charge in approximately 40 minutes. The vehicle also supports standard CCS charging at any public station.
The interior seats seven passengers across three rows, with the second row offering either captain's chairs or a bench configuration. Materials are sustainable and durable, with vegan leather alternatives and recycled materials used throughout. The cabin design emphasizes versatility, with a gear tunnel between the rear seats that provides lockable storage accessible from outside the vehicle, a feature unique to Rivian's platform.
The driver interface centers on a 16-inch touchscreen with Rivian's proprietary software, which includes off-road-specific features like an integrated trail mapping system, pitch and roll indicators, and real-time drive mode displays. The system supports over-the-air updates that have progressively added features since launch.
The R1S's off-road capability is not merely theoretical. Rivian has demonstrated the vehicle on the Trans-Americas Expedition, a journey from Ushuaia to the Arctic Ocean, proving that electric vehicles can operate in the most extreme conditions on Earth. The quad-motor system's ability to precisely control individual wheel speeds enables maneuvers like tank turns, where the left and right wheels spin in opposite directions to rotate the vehicle in place.
As a startup product, the R1S represents a remarkable engineering achievement. The vehicle competes directly with the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQS SUV, and BMW iX while offering off-road capabilities that none of those vehicles can match. The combination of adventure-ready hardware, electric performance, and thoughtful design has created a loyal customer base that values the R1S as a genuinely new kind of vehicle rather than an electric adaptation of a conventional concept.

The air suspension system is complex and any issues should be addressed under warranty. Panel fit and paint quality can vary between production batches.
