Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray

The C8 Corvette is the most revolutionary redesign in the car's 70-year history. After decades of rumors and false starts, Chevrolet finally moved the engine behind the driver, transforming the Corvette from a front-engine sports car into a mid-engine supercar. The result shocked the automotive world: genuine supercar performance for the price of a well-equipped luxury sedan.

The LT2 V8 — a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated unit producing 495 hp with the Z51 performance exhaust — sits behind the cockpit in a longitudinal orientation, driving the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The mid-engine layout gives the C8 a fundamentally different character than any previous Corvette: better traction, more neutral handling, and a lower polar moment of inertia.

The performance numbers are staggering for a car starting under $66,000. The C8 reaches 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, covers the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds, and pulls over 1.0g on the skidpad. These figures rival the Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren GT at less than one-third the price.

The design is dramatic and modern, with a sharp-edged body that bears little resemblance to previous Corvettes. The long, sculpted side intakes, flying buttresses, and visible engine under glass in the rear deck give it an exotic presence. The removable roof panel stores neatly in the trunk, maintaining the Corvette tradition of open-air motoring.

Inside, the C8 is a massive step forward. The driver-centric cockpit features a configurable digital instrument cluster, a central touchscreen angled toward the driver, and a narrow center console with a row of buttons. Material quality is improved but still lags behind European competitors in some areas.

The C8's impact extends beyond its specifications. By delivering mid-engine supercar performance at a mainstream price, it has fundamentally disrupted the sports car market hierarchy. Cars that once stood above the Corvette now must justify their higher prices against a competitor that offers comparable or superior performance.

$55,000 – $85,000

The C8 market has stabilized from initial hype pricing. Z51 cars are the most desirable standard Stingray. Check for the common lifter/AFM issue (deactivation system failures). The dual-clutch transmission is robust but expensive if problems occur. Avoid early 2020 models with known teething issues — 2022+ production is more refined. The frunk (front trunk) provides practical storage. Carbon flash metallic exterior accents on the Z51 are a desirable visual cue.

The C8 launched as a 2020 model but early production was disrupted by COVID-19 and supplier issues. Initial demand far outstripped supply, with dealer markups of $10,000-30,000 common. The Z51 performance package is ordered on roughly 70% of C8s. The convertible (with a retractable hardtop) arrived in mid-2020. The Z06 with a flat-plane crank V8 (670 hp) launched for 2023.
