Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 Clubsport S

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, produced in a limited run of just 400 units in 2016, was the most extreme Golf GTI ever built and the car that set the Nurburgring Nordschleife front-wheel-drive lap record at 7 minutes 49.21 seconds. This achievement — unthinkable for a front-wheel-drive hatchback — validated the GTI concept at the highest level of performance and cemented the Mk7 generation as one of the finest hot hatches ever created.

The Clubsport S took the standard Clubsport's EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and increased output to 310 horsepower — up from the Clubsport's 265 hp (with momentary overboost to 290 hp). This power was delivered through a six-speed manual gearbox and a recalibrated electronically controlled front differential lock to the front wheels only. Managing 310 horsepower through the front wheels alone was a remarkable engineering achievement, enabled by sophisticated torque vectoring that selectively braked the inside front wheel during cornering to reduce understeer.

Weight reduction was pursued with characteristic German thoroughness. The rear seats were removed, saving approximately 30 kg. A lightweight battery, reduced sound insulation, and lightweight alloy wheels contributed further savings. The total weight reduction of approximately 50 kg over the standard Clubsport brought the Clubsport S to a fighting weight of 1,285 kg — remarkably light for a modern car with this level of equipment and safety features.

The suspension was lowered by 10mm compared to the standard GTI and fitted with specific spring rates and adaptive damper calibration optimized for circuit use. The brakes were uprated with larger discs and racing-compound pads. Semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires were fitted as standard — aggressive rubber that provided extraordinary grip on dry surfaces at the cost of reduced wet-weather performance and rapid wear.

The Nurburgring record lap was set by touring car driver Benjamin Leuchter in May 2016. The time of 7:49.21 was remarkable not just for its outright speed but for the way it was achieved — a front-wheel-drive hatchback lapping the world's most demanding circuit faster than many sports cars with twice its power. The lap demonstrated the effectiveness of the Clubsport S's chassis setup, differential calibration, and weight distribution in allowing a skilled driver to exploit the full potential of its performance.

The Clubsport S was offered exclusively as a three-door, two-seat hatchback in selected European markets — it was never officially sold in the United States. Only 400 units were produced, each individually numbered. The car was available in Tornado Red, Pure White, and Deep Black, with the Clubsport's distinctive body kit including a larger front splitter, rear spoiler, and honeycomb grille pattern.

The Golf GTI Clubsport S represents the ultimate expression of the hot hatch philosophy: extraordinary performance from a fundamentally practical platform, achieved through engineering rather than exotic materials or extravagant displacement. It proved that front-wheel drive, four cylinders, and a manual gearbox could achieve results that challenged the established sports car hierarchy.

With only 400 units, verify authenticity and production number. The EA888 Gen 3 engine is generally reliable but check for carbon buildup on intake valves (common with direct injection). Inspect the turbocharger for boost leaks. The manual gearbox is robust but check for synchro wear on 3rd gear. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wear quickly — budget for replacement. Check for signs of track abuse (warped brake discs, worn suspension bushings, curbed wheels). Unmodified, low-mileage examples command significant premiums. Verify the rear seat delete is factory-original.

Limited to 400 units worldwide in 2016 only. European market exclusive — never officially sold in the USA. Each car individually numbered. Available only as a 3-door with 6-speed manual. The Nurburgring FWD record of 7:49.21 was set by Benjamin Leuchter in May 2016. Based on the standard Clubsport with additional power and weight reduction.
