Skoda Octavia RS vRS 245
The Skoda Octavia RS (sold as vRS in some markets) has been the thinking person's performance car since the nameplate was first applied in 2001. By the Mk3 and Mk4 generations, the Octavia RS had evolved into something genuinely remarkable — a car that combined the mechanical sophistication of the Volkswagen Golf GTI with the practicality of a large family liftback, all at a price that made competitors seem overpriced.
The Octavia RS 245 uses the VW Group's EA888 2.0 TSI turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 245 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. The engine is shared with the Golf GTI Clubsport and Cupra Leon, ensuring well-proven reliability and extensive aftermarket support. A 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission is standard on most variants, with a 6-speed manual available in some markets.
What makes the Octavia RS unique within the VW Group is its packaging. At 4,689mm long with a 2,686mm wheelbase, the Octavia is significantly larger than the Golf, offering genuine five-adult accommodation and a cavernous 600-liter boot that extends to 1,555 liters with the rear seats folded. The liftback body style provides hatchback versatility with sedan aesthetics. An estate version adds even more practicality.
The chassis is well sorted, with a multi-link rear suspension (rather than the torsion beam used in lesser Octavia variants) providing a sophisticated balance of ride comfort and handling precision. The electronically controlled VAQ limited-slip differential manages torque steer and improves traction out of corners. In Dynamic mode, the adaptive dampers firm up and the steering weights up, creating a genuinely engaging driving experience.
The Mk4 Octavia RS, launched in 2020, added visual drama with more aggressive bodywork, LED matrix headlights, and a revised interior featuring a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A plug-in hybrid variant (RS iV) was also introduced, combining a 1.4 TSI engine with an electric motor for 245 total system horsepower and the ability to run in pure electric mode for short distances.
The Octavia RS represents the pragmatic choice in the performance car world. It may lack the badge cachet of a BMW 3 Series or Audi S3, but it offers comparable or superior performance, vastly more interior space, and a purchase price that leaves a significant amount of change. For buyers who prioritize substance over image, it is arguably the best performance sedan value in the world.
Check for DSG mechatronic unit issues — the 7-speed DQ381 is generally reliable but not immune. Listen for wastegate rattle on the EA888 engine. Check water pump — these are known to fail (plastic impeller). Verify timing chain tensioner has been updated if applicable. The multi-link rear suspension bushings are long-lived but check at high mileage. Interior plastics can scratch easily. Ensure the VAQ limited-slip differential engages correctly.
Built at Skoda's main Mlada Boleslav factory. Shares the MQB platform with VW Golf, Audi A3, SEAT Leon, and CUPRA. EA888 engine sourced from VW Group's engine plants. Available as Liftback (sedan/hatch) and Combi (estate). Mk3 RS launched 2013, Mk4 RS launched 2020. The RS iV plug-in hybrid was introduced with the Mk4.
