Mahindra Thar CRDe 4x4
The Mahindra Thar represents the modern evolution of a lineage that stretches back to 1947, when Mahindra & Mahindra first began assembling Willys Jeeps under license in India. Over the decades, Mahindra progressively indigenized and modernized the design, and the Thar is the latest expression of this heritage — a rugged, affordable, go-anywhere off-roader that has become an icon of Indian automotive culture.
The first-generation Thar, launched in 2010, retained the essential Jeep DNA: a ladder-frame chassis, front and rear rigid axles, leaf spring suspension, and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low-range transfer case. The 2.5-liter CRDi turbodiesel engine provided adequate power with the tractable, low-down torque characteristics ideal for off-road driving.
What makes the Thar special is its authenticity as a working off-road vehicle. In a market increasingly dominated by lifestyle SUVs that never leave tarmac, the Thar is genuinely capable in extreme terrain. It has become enormously popular for adventure tourism in India's Himalayan regions, desert rallies, and as a modification platform for off-road enthusiasts.
The Thar's significance extends beyond its mechanical capabilities. It represents the longest continuous automotive heritage in India — over 75 years of Jeep-derived vehicles from the same manufacturer. When Mahindra launched the second-generation Thar in 2020, it became India's most anticipated new car launch, demonstrating the enduring appeal of the honest, capable off-roader.
Thar is built for durability — mechanical components are robust. Check chassis for rust and off-road damage. Diesel engine is reliable but check turbo condition and injectors. Four-wheel-drive system including transfer case should be tested. Leaf springs may sag from heavy use. Interior is basic but functional. Many have been heavily modified — original specification is better for collectors. Available readily in India, rare elsewhere.
Built by Mahindra & Mahindra at their Nasik plant. Based on the company's 70+ year heritage of building Jeep-derived vehicles under license. Ladder-frame chassis with part-time 4WD. The first-generation Thar was succeeded by a more modern second generation in 2020. Mahindra is now the world's largest tractor manufacturer and one of India's biggest automakers.
