Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Lightweight
The Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, introduced in 2007, was the first lightweight special edition of Lamborghini's enormously successful entry-level supercar. Taking its name from the Italian word for super-light (and Touring's famous construction technique), the Superleggera shed approximately 100 kilograms from the standard Gallardo through extensive use of carbon fiber and the deletion of comfort-oriented features.
The weight reduction program was comprehensive. Carbon fiber was used for the engine cover, rear diffuser, door mirror housings, and interior trim. The fixed rear wing was also carbon fiber, and polycarbonate replaced glass for the rear window and engine cover glazing. Inside, lightweight carbon-backed bucket seats replaced the standard items, and sound deadening was reduced. The overall curb weight dropped to approximately 1,340 kilograms.
The V10 engine received a modest power increase to 530 horsepower (up from 520 in the standard car) through revised engine mapping and a free-flowing exhaust system. Combined with the significant weight reduction, this translated to a markedly improved power-to-weight ratio that was evident in every aspect of the driving experience. The car accelerated harder, stopped quicker, and changed direction with greater urgency than the standard Gallardo.
The Superleggera was available with either the E-gear semi-automatic transmission or the traditional six-speed manual gated shifter. Both options were paired with Lamborghini's permanent all-wheel-drive system. Carbon-ceramic brakes were standard, providing fade-free stopping power even during extended track sessions.
The driving experience was sharper and more immediate than the standard Gallardo. The reduced weight, combined with stiffer suspension settings and the more responsive engine, created a car that felt genuinely alive and connected. The exhaust note was more prominent thanks to the sports exhaust, and the fixed rear wing provided genuine downforce at higher speeds.
Approximately 618 Superleggeras were produced, making it a relatively rare variant within the broader Gallardo family that eventually totaled over 14,000 units. The Superleggera established the template for lightweight, performance-enhanced Gallardo variants that would continue with the LP 570-4 Superleggera and influence the Huracan Performante that followed.
Manual gearbox versions are increasingly sought after and command a premium. Check carbon fiber components for damage or poor repairs. Carbon-ceramic brakes should be inspected for remaining life. E-gear actuator and hydraulic pump are expensive wear items. The V10 engine is robust with proper maintenance. Verify that all Superleggera-specific equipment is present. Service history from Lamborghini dealers is important.
Approximately 618 units produced in 2007-2008. Weight reduced by approximately 100kg through carbon fiber body panels, polycarbonate glazing, and stripped interior. Available with E-gear or manual gearbox. Carbon-ceramic brakes standard. Fixed carbon fiber rear wing. The Superleggera was the first lightweight Gallardo variant and set the template for future special editions.
