Porsche Boxster S (986)

The 986 Boxster S arrived in 2000 as the performance-oriented variant of Porsche's entry-level roadster. While the base Boxster used a 2.7-liter flat-six, the S received a larger 3,179cc unit producing 260 horsepower at 6,200 rpm — a meaningful increase that transformed the car from merely enjoyable into genuinely thrilling.

The mid-mounted engine layout was the Boxster S's secret weapon. With the flat-six positioned directly behind the cockpit, weight distribution was virtually perfect at 46/54 front-to-rear. This gave the car an uncanny ability to change direction, with turn-in response that was sharper and more immediate than the rear-engined 911. Many experienced drivers and journalists concluded that the Boxster S was the better driver's car.

The 3.2-liter engine featured VarioCam variable valve timing, a two-stage resonance intake manifold, and Porsche's Motronic engine management system. It revved cleanly to 6,800 rpm with a satisfying flat-six wail that was distinctly Porsche. A six-speed manual gearbox or five-speed Tiptronic automatic were available, though the manual was overwhelmingly preferred by enthusiasts.

The S chassis benefited from stiffer springs and dampers, larger 17-inch wheels (with optional 18-inch), and uprated brakes with red-painted calipers. The power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering provided excellent feel and precision. With the electric soft top lowered, the Boxster S offered one of the most engaging open-air driving experiences available at any price.

The interior was improved over the base car with partial leather, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Litronic headlamps. The dual-trunk layout (front and rear) provided surprisingly practical luggage capacity for a mid-engined sports car.

The 986 Boxster S proved that Porsche could build a more affordable sports car without diluting the brand's engineering excellence. Today, these cars represent outstanding value in the Porsche market — offering genuine mid-engine sports car dynamics, Porsche build quality, and the flat-six soundtrack for a fraction of a 911's cost.

The IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing is the primary concern — budget for a bearing upgrade if not already done. Check for RMS (Rear Main Seal) oil leaks. Convertible top hydraulic system can develop leaks. Bore scoring affects some engines. Cylinder liner cracking has been reported. The convertible top motor and hydraulic lines are expensive to repair.

Produced at the Valmet Automotive factory in Uusikaupunki, Finland, from 2000 to 2004 as part of overall 986 Boxster production. The S variant represented approximately 35-40% of total Boxster production during this period.
