TVR Chimaera 500

The TVR Chimaera was the most commercially successful TVR ever built, and the 500 variant was the ultimate expression of the model. Powered by a 5.0-liter version of the Rover V8, the Chimaera 500 produced 340 horsepower in a car weighing just over a tonne — a recipe for extraordinary performance. With no traction control, no ABS, no airbags, and no electronic stability systems of any kind, the Chimaera 500 required a skilled and attentive driver, but rewarded them with an experience that no safety-conscious modern car can match. The chassis, designed by TVR's talented engineering team in Blackpool, used a tubular steel backbone frame with fiberglass bodywork, wrapped in one of the most beautiful shapes to emerge from the factory. The Chimaera was conceived as a grand tourer rather than a pure sports car — it was softer and more comfortable than the Griffith, with a larger boot and a more compliant ride. But the 500's massive torque and lightweight construction meant it was never slow. The soundtrack of that V8 at full chat, echoing off the fiberglass body, remains one of motoring's great pleasures.

$20,000 – $55,000

The tubular chassis must be inspected for corrosion — this is structural and expensive to repair. The Rover V8 is well-known but the 5.0L version needs careful maintenance. Fiberglass body doesn't rust but can crack from stress or impact. Check for electrical issues — TVR wiring is handmade. A specialist PPI is absolutely essential. Budget for maintenance.

The Chimaera was TVR's biggest seller, with approximately 6,000 built over a ten-year production run. Engine options ranged from 4.0L to 5.0L Rover V8. The 500 was introduced in 1998 as the range-topping model. Built entirely by hand in Blackpool with fiberglass body panels.
