The Mazda Autozam AZ-1 stands as perhaps the most extreme expression of kei car regulations ever produced, featuring exotic supercar proportions and engineering in a 657cc package. Its mid-mounted turbocharged inline-3 engine, tubular spaceframe chassis, and dramatic gullwing doors made it a legitimate sports car despite diminutive dimensions. Weighing barely 720kg and producing the maximum allowed 64hp, it offered an incredibly pure driving experience. Developed during the bubble economy when manufacturers could justify such impractical passion projects, the AZ-1's commercial failure and tiny production run have made it one of the most sought-after JDM collector cars globally.
