Mercedes-Benz 300CE AMG Hammer Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz 300CE AMG Hammer Coupe represents one of the most extreme and collectible AMG creations of the 1980s. AMG, still an independent tuner at the time, took the elegant W124 coupe and transformed it into a supercar-slaying monster. The centerpiece was AMG's 5.6-liter V8 engine, developed by boring out Mercedes' M117 V8 to massive displacement. With extensive internal modifications, custom camshafts, ported heads, and optimized intake and exhaust, the Hammer produced 360 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Performance was absolutely staggering for the era. The Hammer Coupe could accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.0 seconds and reach a verified top speed of 186 mph, making it one of the fastest sedans in the world and faster than contemporary Ferraris and Porsches. Yet it accomplished this while maintaining the civility and luxury of a Mercedes-Benz coupe, complete with leather interior, climate control, and elegant styling. The Q-ship nature made it even more impressive – nothing in the subtle exterior hinted at the performance lurking beneath.

AMG's modifications extended beyond the engine. The suspension was completely reworked with stiffer springs, upgraded dampers, and larger anti-roll bars. Brakes were enlarged with ventilated discs at all four corners. The wheels were AMG's distinctive multi-spoke design, sized at 17 inches – massive for the time. A subtle body kit with front spoiler and side skirts improved aerodynamics while maintaining the coupe's elegant proportions.

Only approximately 12 Hammer Coupes were built, making them extraordinarily rare. Most conversions were sedans; the coupe body style was even more exclusive. Today, the Hammer Coupe is among the most collectible AMG vehicles ever created, with values exceeding $400,000 for the best examples. The combination of extreme rarity, supercar performance, elegant styling, and AMG's legendary reputation makes the Hammer Coupe one of the ultimate 1980s collectibles.
