History
Gurgel BR-800
João Augusto Conrado do Amaral Gurgel created the BR-800 as Brazil's answer to affordable transportation using innovative materials and design. Featuring plastic body panels over a steel frame and VW Gol running gear, it was lightweight and practical. The company pioneered use of alternative materials in Brazilian automotive industry. Despite technical innovation and government support, high costs and competition from established manufacturers led to Gurgel's bankruptcy in 1995.
