Lamborghini Countach LP500 QV
Introduced in 1985, the Countach Quattrovalvole (QV, meaning 'four valves') represented a significant technical evolution of Lamborghini's iconic supercar. The 5.2-liter V12 was redesigned with four valves per cylinder, increased compression, and revised intake manifolds, resulting in 455 horsepower and improved throttle response across the rev range.
Externally, the QV was distinguished by the removal of NACA ducts from the door sills, revised rear wing mounting, and updated Bravo wheels. The interior received improved air conditioning, upgraded electronics, and better quality materials, addressing some comfort complaints from earlier Countach models while maintaining the dramatic scissor doors and low-slung driving position.
Performance was exceptional even by modern standards, with 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds and a top speed approaching 184 mph. The quad-cam V12 delivered its power with a mechanical symphony that remains one of the most celebrated engine notes in automotive history. The gated manual shifter, though notchy and heavy, became an iconic element of the driving experience.
The QV sold better than any previous Countach variant, with 610 examples produced before being replaced by the 25th Anniversary Edition. Today, the QV is considered by many enthusiasts to be the quintessential Countach, balancing raw 1970s design with improved 1980s engineering and reasonable collectibility compared to earlier, rarer variants.
Verify complete service records and maintenance history. Check for accident damage as space frame repairs are extremely complex. Carbureted models require dedicated expertise versus fuel-injected later examples. Test all electrical systems thoroughly. Interior condition significantly affects value. Ensure engine doesn't overheat during test drive. Original matching-numbers powertrain commands premium. Be prepared for six-figure maintenance costs.
Later QV models transitioned from Weber carburetors to Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection in 1987. Some early QVs were retrofitted with Anniversary Edition bodywork by dealers.
