Dodge Shelby Charger

The 1985 Dodge Shelby Charger represented Carroll Shelby's return to performance car development after his legendary work on the Cobra and GT350 Mustang. Working with Dodge's compact L-body Charger, Shelby extracted impressive performance from the turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, boosting output to 146 horsepower. Shelby added improved suspension tuning, performance wheels and tires, aerodynamic body enhancements, and distinctive graphics. The result was a surprisingly capable front-wheel drive sport compact that could embarrass larger V8-powered cars while delivering excellent fuel economy. It proved that Shelby's performance expertise transcended drivetrain layout.

Verify Shelby authenticity with serial number plate. Turbo engines need careful inspection - boost leaks common. Check for modifications as many were modified by enthusiasts. Suspension bushings wear quickly. Front-wheel drive means CV joints and axles need inspection. Low production makes clean examples increasingly collectible.

Shelby Chargers were built by Dodge then modified by Shelby. Production totaled 8,251 units from 1983-1987. 1985 models featured improved turbo 2.2 engine with 146 hp. Available only in specific color combinations. Each received Shelby serial number. Led to more powerful Shelby GLH models.
