Holden Gemini SL

The Holden Gemini was one of the most significant small cars in Australian automotive history. Based on the Isuzu Gemini (itself derived from the Opel Kadett C platform), it was assembled in Australia by General Motors-Holden from 1975 to 1986 and became the country's best-selling small car.

The Gemini arrived at exactly the right time. The 1973 oil crisis had made Australians reconsider their traditional preference for large six-cylinder sedans, and the compact, efficient Gemini offered a compelling alternative. Its 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine was economical and reliable, if not particularly exciting, returning fuel consumption figures that embarrassed the big Holden Kingswood and Ford Falcon.

Available in sedan, coupe, and panel van body styles, the Gemini proved remarkably versatile. The panel van version became particularly popular with young Australians who customized them extensively — the Gemini panel van became as much a part of 1970s Australian youth culture as the HQ Holden Sandman.

Through its production run, the Gemini went through several series: TX (1975), TC (1976), TD (1978), TE (1979), TF (1981), and TG (1982). Each brought incremental improvements to equipment levels, safety features, and comfort. The diesel version, introduced in 1981, was one of the first diesel passenger cars offered in Australia.

The Gemini sold in huge numbers — at its peak it was outselling every other small car in Australia combined. It was also assembled in several other markets including New Zealand, the Philippines, and Thailand. In motorsport, the Gemini competed in production car racing and rallying, proving more capable than its modest specifications might suggest.

The Gemini was replaced by the front-wheel-drive Holden Astra in 1984 and the Holden Barina, marking the end of an era for rear-wheel-drive small cars in Australia.

$3,000 – $15,000

The Gemini is increasingly collectible, especially the early TX/TC coupes and panel vans. Rust is the main enemy — check floor pans, wheel arches, and sills thoroughly. Mechanical parts are shared with Isuzu Gemini worldwide, so sourcing is feasible through Japanese parts suppliers. The 1.6L engine is robust and simple to maintain. Panel vans with period customization (murals, interiors) command premiums. SL/E models with full equipment are preferred by collectors.

Assembled at GM-H Acacia Ridge, Queensland from CKD kits and locally sourced components. Based on Isuzu Gemini/Opel Kadett C platform. Available as sedan, coupe, and panel van. Series: TX, TC, TD, TE, TF, TG. Diesel option available from 1981. Also assembled in New Zealand, Philippines, and Thailand.
