Plymouth Duster 340

The Plymouth Duster 340 was Chrysler's answer to the budget muscle car movement. Based on the Valiant A-body platform, the Duster was lighter and cheaper than B-body muscle cars like the Road Runner and GTX. With the rev-happy 340 small-block V8 producing 275 horsepower, the Duster 340 could run with cars costing thousands more. Its light weight (just over 3,000 lbs) gave it a power-to-weight ratio that embarrassed many big-block cars. The Duster became one of Plymouth's best sellers, with the performance models attracting young buyers who couldn't afford a 'Cuda or Road Runner. The 340 engine's reputation as one of the best small-blocks ever built ensures the Duster 340's continued popularity among enthusiasts.

340 models from 1970-1971 are the most desirable (pre-detuned). Look for matching-numbers drivetrain. A-body rust spots: floors, trunk, lower quarters. The 340 is well-supported by the Mopar aftermarket. These are among the most affordable genuine muscle cars. Check for Valiant conversions posing as Dusters.

The Duster launched in 1970 as a fastback variant of the Valiant. The 340 model was available 1970-1973 (replaced by 360 in 1974). Over 1.3 million Dusters were built total. The Twister and Gold Duster were appearance packages.
