Reliant Scimitar GTE SE6
The Reliant Scimitar GTE, introduced in 1968, created an entirely new category of vehicle - the sporting estate car that combined performance, style, and genuine practicality. Designed by Tom Karen of Ogle Design, the GTE featured a distinctive shooting brake body with a large glass tailgate providing access to a surprisingly spacious cargo area. The fiberglass body kept weight low while the backbone chassis provided excellent rigidity. Power came from Ford's robust Essex V6 engine - initially 3.0 liters producing 138 horsepower, later increased to 3.0 liters with improved output. The combination delivered brisk performance with 0-60mph in under 9 seconds and a top speed approaching 120mph, while the generous cargo space meant you could carry golf clubs, luggage, or even a dog. The interior featured comfortable seating for four adults, comprehensive instrumentation, and quality trim. The GTE found particular favor with the British royal family - Princess Anne owned eight examples and the car became synonymous with upper-middle-class British sporting motoring. Over 15,000 were built during an 11-year production run.
The Scimitar GTE offers excellent value for practical classic car ownership. Inspect chassis thoroughly for rust - this is the critical structural element. Check fiberglass body for stress cracks particularly around door apertures and rear hatch. Ford V6 engine robust but verify timing chain condition and listen for bearing noise. Test all electrical systems as Lucas components can be troublesome. Ensure rear hatch operates smoothly and seals properly. Interior trim quality varies - look for original unmolested examples. Service history important though many have patchy documentation. Parts availability good through specialists and owners club. SE5 and SE6 models most desirable. Budget modestly for maintenance as Ford mechanicals keep costs reasonable. Excellent for touring and events.
