Triumph Spitfire Mk 1

Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the Spitfire combined elegant Italian styling with British engineering practicality. Based on Triumph Herald components to keep costs down, the Spitfire offered genuine sports car thrills at an affordable price. Its lightweight construction, independent rear suspension, and responsive steering made it a delight on winding roads despite the modest 63 hp output. The one-piece front-hinged bonnet provided excellent engine access, while the compact dimensions and tight turning circle made it ideal for European roads. The Spitfire became one of Triumph's most successful models, remaining in production for 18 years.

Check for rust in chassis, especially rear frame sections and floor pans. Swing-axle rear suspension needs careful inspection. Body-on-frame construction means rust can hide under sills and body mounts. Herald mechanicals are simple and parts readily available. Many have been modified or restored. Original Mk 1 features include pull-door handles and early dash layout. Hardtops are desirable and add value.

45,753 Mark 1 Spitfires were built from 1962 to 1964. Based on the Triumph Herald platform with modified chassis and bodywork designed by Michelotti. The swing-axle rear suspension was criticized for handling quirks but kept costs low. Mark 2 introduced in 1964 with improved performance.
