History
EMW 340
After World War II, the former BMW factory in Eisenach fell into Soviet-occupied territory and was nationalized as Eisenacher Motorenwerk (EMW). The EMW 340 was essentially a BMW 326 with minor modifications, featuring a 2.0-liter inline-six engine and elegant pre-war styling. Production quality was high by East German standards, and the car was primarily reserved for government officials and export to earn hard currency. Only about 21,000 units were produced before BMW successfully contested the use of their design, leading to the development of the distinct Wartburg line.
