Porsche 911 GT3 RS 992

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS in 992 generation represents the most aerodynamically advanced and track-focused road-legal 911 ever created. When Porsche's GT department, led by Andreas Preuninger, set out to develop the 992 GT3 RS, the team looked directly to the 911 RSR mid-engine race car and the 992 GT3 Cup car for inspiration. The result is a machine that generates more downforce than any previous road-going 911 — up to 409 kilograms at 200 km/h, roughly triple the amount of the previous 991.2 GT3 RS.

The centerpiece of this aerodynamic transformation is the massive two-piece rear wing, which features an upper element that acts as a DRS (Drag Reduction System) flap. Activated by a button on the steering wheel or automatically by the stability management system, the DRS flap can reduce drag by flattening its angle of attack on straights, then snap back to maximum downforce for braking zones. The front axle features radiator-mounted air ducts and continuously adjustable wing elements above each wheel, all controlled by the car's central processor to optimize balance dynamically.

Beneath the carbon fiber bodywork sits the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine, essentially the same unit as the standard GT3 but with revised intake and exhaust tuning to extract 518 horsepower at a screaming 8,500 RPM, with maximum revs available up to 9,000 RPM. This engine is a masterpiece of naturally aspirated engineering in an era of turbocharging, using individual throttle bodies for each cylinder, a dry-sump lubrication system, and titanium connecting rods. The sound at full chat is one of the great automotive experiences available today.

Porsche chose to offer the GT3 RS exclusively with the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, reasoning that the shift speed advantage is too significant for a car intended to set lap times. The manual gearbox available in the standard GT3 was deemed too slow for the RS mission. The PDK calibration is specific to the RS, with faster shift times and more aggressive programming.

The chassis utilizes rear-axle steering, turning the rear wheels up to two degrees opposite to the fronts at low speed for agility, and in the same direction at high speed for stability. Ball-joint suspension links replace rubber bushings throughout, and the spring rates are significantly stiffer than the standard GT3. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) anti-roll blades replace conventional steel anti-roll bars, saving weight while providing consistent response.

Inside, the GT3 RS features carbon-fiber bucket seats (available in two widths), Alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, and a stripped-back approach that prioritizes function over luxury. The PDK shifter is replaced with a simple toggle switch. A roll cage is optionally available. The central screen can display a track map with real-time sector timing, and the instrument cluster features a prominent shift light bar.

The 992 GT3 RS has set remarkable lap times at circuits worldwide, including a sub-seven-minute Nurburgring Nordschleife time that would have been supercar territory just a decade ago. It demonstrates that the naturally aspirated, rear-engine 911 formula still has extraordinary performance potential when developed without compromise.

$250,000 – $400,000

New cars typically sell above MSRP due to high demand. Dealer allocation is based on purchase history and relationship. The Weissach Package adds approximately $30,000 but is desirable for collectors. PTS (Paint to Sample) colors command premiums in the resale market. Low-mileage, well-optioned examples hold value extremely well. Track use does not necessarily diminish value if properly documented and maintained. Consider ceramic coating and PPF for paint protection given the investment.

Currently in production. Porsche typically limits GT3 RS production to meet demand without overproduction. All units equipped with PDK only — no manual option. Weissach Package available as a cost option, further reducing weight with magnesium wheels and carbon-fiber roof. PCCB carbon-ceramic brakes are standard equipment.
