The 2023 Lucid Air Sapphire occupies a unique position in the automotive universe: it is simultaneously the most powerful, the fastest, and arguably the most technologically advanced sedan ever produced. With 1,234 horsepower from three electric motors, a quarter-mile time of 8.95 seconds, and a 0-60 mph sprint of just 1.89 seconds, the Sapphire does not merely set new benchmarks; it exists in a performance category that no sedan, electric or otherwise, has ever touched before.
The Sapphire is the brainchild of Peter Rawlinson, Lucid's CEO and former chief engineer of the Tesla Model S. Rawlinson's deep understanding of EV architecture is evident in every aspect of the Air's design. The Sapphire adds a third electric motor to the standard Air's dual-motor setup, placing twin motors on the rear axle and a single motor at the front. Each rear motor is a bespoke unit designed specifically for the Sapphire application, and the combined system produces the equivalent of 1,234 horsepower and an astonishing 1,430 lb-ft of torque, all delivered with the instantaneous response that only electric power can provide.
What truly sets the Sapphire apart from other high-performance EVs is its 900-volt electrical architecture, the highest voltage of any production car. This enables faster charging speeds, reduced wiring weight, lower heat generation, and more efficient power delivery. The 118 kWh battery pack can accept over 300 kW of DC fast charging, adding roughly 200 miles of range in just 20 minutes. Despite its staggering performance, the Air Sapphire maintains an EPA-rated range of approximately 427 miles in less aggressive configurations, a testament to Lucid's industry-leading efficiency.
The chassis has been comprehensively upgraded for the Sapphire variant. Carbon ceramic brakes from Brembo replace the standard steel units, providing consistent stopping power under repeated heavy use. The adaptive air suspension is retuned for a lower ride height and firmer damping, and an active anti-roll system minimizes body lean during aggressive cornering. Unique 21-inch forged wheels wear Aero Sapphire covers, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in staggered widths maximize grip. The steering has been recalibrated for increased weight and precision.
Inside, the Sapphire maintains the Air's extraordinary space efficiency, a product of Lucid's compact drivetrain packaging. The front trunk is among the largest of any EV, and rear legroom is genuinely limousine-class thanks to the flat floor and long wheelbase. Sapphire-specific touches include Alcantara-trimmed sports seats with pronounced bolsters, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, unique interior color combinations in Sapphire Blue, and a dedicated Sapphire drive mode accessed through the curved 34-inch floating display.
The driving experience has been universally praised by critics. The acceleration is described as violent and disorienting, the kind of force that causes tunnel vision and makes passengers gasp involuntarily. But unlike some high-performance EVs that feel one-dimensional, the Sapphire handles with genuine precision and communication. The rear torque vectoring, achieved by independently controlling the twin rear motors, provides a level of rear-axle agility that rivals dedicated sports cars. On track, the Sapphire has posted times that embarrass vehicles costing two and three times as much.
The Lucid Air Sapphire is significant because it proves that the electric luxury sedan can be all things at once: staggeringly fast, genuinely luxurious, extraordinarily efficient, and practical enough for daily use. It is the car that Peter Rawlinson set out to build when he left Tesla, and it represents the current apex of what electric vehicle engineering can achieve. Early Sapphire models will almost certainly be viewed as landmark vehicles in the history of automotive performance.
As a limited-production, built-to-order model, the Sapphire holds value better than standard Air models. Verify battery health and charging history. Check for any software update status. The carbon ceramic brakes are expensive to replace but extremely durable. Panel fit should be inspected as Lucid, like all startup EV makers, has had quality variation. Sapphire Blue exterior and matching interior is the most iconic specification.
The Sapphire was unveiled in August 2022 and deliveries began in late 2023. Production is limited and builds are made to order. Lucid manufactures all vehicles at its AMP-1 factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. The 900V architecture is unique among production vehicles.
