Great Wall Tank 300 Off-Road Edition

The Great Wall Tank 300 is one of the most interesting vehicles to emerge from China's rapidly evolving automotive industry. Launched in 2021 under Great Wall Motors' Tank sub-brand (which was subsequently spun off as an independent marque), the Tank 300 takes unabashed aim at the luxury off-road segment dominated by the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Jeep Wrangler, offering comparable capability and style at a dramatically lower price.

The Tank 300's design is unapologetically retro-modern, combining boxy proportions, circular headlights, and a prominent grille with contemporary LED lighting and sculpted body panels. The result is a vehicle that projects rugged capability without apology, and its styling has proven enormously popular with Chinese consumers who appreciate the blend of heritage-inspired design and modern execution.

Beneath the characterful exterior lies serious off-road engineering. The body-on-frame construction uses a ladder chassis that provides the rigidity and durability required for genuine off-road use. The four-wheel-drive system features a two-speed transfer case with locking center differential, a rear electronic locking differential, and terrain response modes including sand, mud, snow, and rock crawl. The Off-Road Edition adds additional underbody protection and off-road-specific equipment.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 220 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque, mated to a ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic transmission. While a V6 or V8 might seem more appropriate for a vehicle of this character, the turbocharged four-cylinder provides adequate performance while meeting increasingly stringent Chinese emission standards. A PHEV version with a combined 400+ horsepower is also available.

The interior is notably well-appointed for a Chinese off-road vehicle, with leather seats, a large infotainment touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and comprehensive safety features including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. The rear seat offers generous space, and the boot provides practical cargo capacity.

The Tank 300 has been a sales phenomenon in China, with demand consistently exceeding supply. Its success has spawned the Tank 500 and Tank 700 larger siblings and has helped establish Great Wall as a serious player in the premium SUV segment. The car is increasingly available in international markets, where it competes not just on price but on genuine capability and desirability.

Available in China and increasingly in international markets. Check for consistent body panel gaps (early production had quality inconsistencies). The ZF 9-speed is proven and reliable. 4WD system should be tested in all modes. Infotainment system receives regular OTA updates. Service network is developing outside China.

The Tank 300 is built at Great Wall's Baoding facility in Hebei province. Demand in China has consistently exceeded production capacity since launch.
