Koenigsegg Regera
The Koenigsegg Regera redefined what a hypercar powertrain could be. While every competitor used multi-gear transmissions, Christian von Koenigsegg decided to eliminate the gearbox entirely. The Koenigsegg Direct Drive (KDD) system uses a hydraulic coupling to connect the 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (1,100 hp) directly to the rear axle at a fixed ratio, supplemented by three electric motors producing an additional 670 hp. The electric motors fill in torque at low speeds where the V8 hasn't reached its operating range, creating a seamlessly accelerating experience with no gear shifts whatsoever — just relentless, uninterrupted thrust. Combined system output is 1,500 hp with 2,000 Nm (1,475 lb-ft) of torque. The result is one of the fastest cars ever built: 0-300 km/h (186 mph) takes just 10.9 seconds. The 'Regera' name means 'to reign' in Swedish, and the car lives up to it. Each of the 80 cars is bespoke, with customers choosing from essentially unlimited exterior colors and interior specifications. The bodywork features Koenigsegg's signature dihedral synchro-helix doors and an active rear wing. The Regera also features a 4.5 kWh battery pack that allows limited electric-only driving. It represents the pinnacle of Koenigsegg's philosophy: radical innovation in service of ultimate performance.
