Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Black Series
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Black Series represents the absolute zenith of AMG's naturally aspirated V8 era, a car that stripped away luxury pretensions to create a road-legal racing car wearing a C-Class body. The Black Series designation, applied only to AMG's most extreme creations, signified a vehicle that prioritized performance above all else, with significant weight reduction, increased power, and a dramatically more aggressive appearance.
The M156 6,208cc naturally aspirated V8 received extensive modifications for Black Series duty. Forged pistons, revised camshafts, optimized intake and exhaust systems, and a higher 11.3:1 compression ratio raised output to 510 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 457 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine revved freely to its 7,200 rpm redline with a spine-tingling mechanical intensity that no turbocharged engine could replicate.
Weight reduction was pursued aggressively. The rear seats were deleted, replaced by a strut brace and carbon fiber luggage shelf. The hood, front fenders, trunk lid, and front splitter were constructed from carbon fiber. The audio system was simplified, and sound deadening was reduced throughout. The result was a car that weighed approximately 1,635 kg, a meaningful reduction over the standard C 63.
The chassis was comprehensively revised. The track was widened by 71mm at the front and 48mm at the rear, necessitating the dramatically flared wheel arches that gave the Black Series its unmistakable appearance. The suspension was lowered and stiffened, with three-way adjustable coilover dampers at the front and a revised multi-link rear arrangement. An adjustable front strut brace and stiffer bushings completed the chassis modifications.
Braking was handled by massive composite discs with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear. An optional Performance Package added carbon-ceramic brakes for even greater stopping power and reduced unsprung weight.
The transmission was the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed, modified with a shorter final drive ratio and more aggressive shift programming. In the most extreme setting, gear changes were accomplished with a brutality that would be unacceptable in a luxury sedan but perfectly suited to a car intended for circuit use.
Driving the C 63 AMG Black Series was an unforgettable experience. The naturally aspirated V8 delivered instant, linear throttle response and an auditory experience that was genuinely extraordinary. The exhaust note, ranging from a deep burble at idle to a savage roar at full throttle, was one of the finest sounds produced by any modern performance car.
Mercedes-AMG produced approximately 600 units of the C 63 Black Series globally. Today, the car is highly coveted as one of the last great naturally aspirated AMG models, and values have appreciated significantly. It represents a moment in AMG's history that will never be repeated, as turbocharging has since become universal across the lineup.
Check the M156 engine for head bolt issues that affected some early examples of this engine family. Inspect the carbon fiber body panels for damage or poor repairs. The three-way adjustable suspension should be tested in all settings. Verify the limited production through AMG records. Unmodified examples in original condition command the highest prices. A full AMG service history is essential.
Approximately 600 units were produced at the Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant between 2011 and 2013. The carbon fiber body panels were manufactured by external suppliers and fitted during the Black Series conversion process. The M156 engine was hand-built at AMG in Affalterbach.
