Mercedes-AMG C 63 AMG Black Series (W204)
The C 63 AMG Black Series was the most extreme version of the W204 C-Class — a car that took AMG's 'one man, one engine' philosophy and wrapped it in the most aggressive body kit ever fitted to a compact Mercedes. With 510 horsepower from its naturally aspirated V8, no rear seats, and track-focused dynamics, the Black Series was designed for drivers who considered the standard C 63 too civilized.
The M156 6,208cc naturally aspirated V8 was hand-assembled by a single AMG technician who signed the engine plaque. In Black Series specification, it produced 510 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 620 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm — a 30-hp increase over the standard C 63 achieved through revised intake porting, a freer-flowing exhaust, and recalibrated engine management. The engine revved to 7,200 rpm with a characteristically AMG combination of mechanical precision and visceral violence.
The body was dramatically widened, with flared front and rear fenders that added 70mm to the overall width. These accommodated wider wheels and tires — 255/35R19 front and 285/30R19 rear — for dramatically increased grip. The front bumper featured massive air intakes, while a carbon-fiber hood with functional heat extractors, a prominent rear wing, and an aggressive rear diffuser completed the visual transformation.
Weight reduction included the deletion of rear seats, replacement of the standard seat frames with lightweight carbon-fiber-backed Recaro buckets, and the use of carbon fiber for the hood, rear wing, and interior trim. The total weight saving was approximately 60 kg, bringing the curb weight to around 1,635 kg.
The suspension was comprehensively revised with stiffer springs, revalved dampers, and a wider rear track. Three-stage electronic damper adjustment allowed the driver to configure the ride from firm to very firm. The AMG composite braking system, with 390mm front and 360mm rear discs, provided exceptional stopping power.
The seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox replaced the standard torque converter with a wet clutch, providing faster shifts and a more direct connection between engine and drive wheels. In Race mode, shifts were completed in 100 milliseconds.
The Black Series could accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and reach a de-restricted top speed of 300 km/h. On track, its combination of power, grip, and chassis balance made it one of the most capable compact performance cars ever built.
Only approximately 800 Black Series models were produced from 2012 to 2013, making it one of the rarest modern AMG products. Today, it is recognized as the finest naturally aspirated V8 AMG of its generation and one of the most exciting compact sports cars ever produced.
The M156 engine can suffer from cam bolt failures — verify this recall was addressed. Check head bolt stretch on early engines. Service history from AMG-authorized dealers is essential. Carbon-fiber components are expensive to repair. MCT transmission adaptation values should be checked. Low-mileage examples command significant premiums. Verify matching engine plaque and build records.
Hand-assembled at AMG's Affalterbach facility from 2012 to 2013 (with some 2014 production for certain markets). Approximately 800 units were produced worldwide. Each engine was hand-built by a single AMG technician.
