Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series

The Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series was the car that established the 'Black Series' nameplate as AMG's ultimate performance expression -- a no-compromise, track-focused version of an existing AMG model that deleted luxury features and added racing technology. Introduced in 2007, the CLK Black Series was the second Black Series model (after the SLK 55 AMG Black Series) and the one that truly defined the concept.

The heart of the CLK Black Series was the M156 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8, AMG's hand-built masterpiece. In Black Series specification, the engine was tuned to produce 507 hp at 6,800 rpm and 465 lb-ft of torque at 5,250 rpm -- significant increases over the standard CLK 63 AMG's 475 hp. The upgrades included a revised intake system, modified exhaust, higher-flow catalytic converters, and recalibrated engine management. Each M156 engine was assembled by a single AMG technician, whose signature appeared on a plaque on the engine cover -- AMG's 'One Man, One Engine' philosophy.

The bodywork was dramatically transformed. The fenders were widened by 30mm at the front and 45mm at the rear to accommodate wider track widths and larger wheels. The front bumper featured massive air intakes and a large splitter, while the rear received an aggressive diffuser and a fixed spoiler. The rear seats were deleted to save weight and allow the installation of a cross-brace that improved chassis rigidity. The result was a car that looked like a DTM racing car in civilian clothing.

The suspension was completely revised with stiffer springs, adjustable coilover dampers, revised geometry, and an increased negative camber for improved cornering grip. The braking system used oversized composite discs with multi-piston fixed calipers derived from AMG's motorsport program. The 7-speed AMG Speedshift transmission was recalibrated for faster, more aggressive shifts.

Inside, the Black Series was stripped to essentials. Lightweight sport seats, Alcantara trim, carbon fiber accents, and the AMG instrument cluster created a purposeful cockpit. The absence of rear seats and the addition of a strut brace behind the front seats emphasized the car's track focus.

AMG produced approximately 700 CLK Black Series units between 2007 and 2009, making it a genuinely rare car. The Black Series was available in several colors, with Obsidian Black being the most popular choice -- appropriately enough for a car bearing the Black Series name.

The CLK Black Series's legacy extends beyond its own production. It established a template that AMG would follow with subsequent Black Series models: the SL 65 AMG Black Series, the C 63 AMG Black Series, and the SLS AMG Black Series. Each applied the same philosophy of weight reduction, increased power, and track-focused chassis tuning.

Today, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series has appreciated significantly from its original $135,000 MSRP. With only 700 built and increasing recognition of the M156 engine as one of the finest naturally aspirated V8s ever produced, clean examples command $150,000 to $300,000. It represents the purest expression of AMG's naturally aspirated V8 era.

The M156 6.2-liter V8 can suffer from head bolt failures (a well-documented issue on early engines). Verify whether the head bolts have been updated to the revised specification. The engine also requires careful maintenance of the timing chain and tensioners. Check for bore wear by listening for startup rattle. The adjustable coilover suspension should be inspected for leaks. With only 700 built, parts availability for Black Series-specific components is limited. Service history from AMG or recognized AMG specialists is essential.

Produced from 2007 to 2009 at AMG's Affalterbach facility. Total production approximately 700 units. The Black Series was the second model to carry the name (after the SLK 55 AMG Black Series) and established the concept. Each M156 engine was hand-assembled by a single technician under AMG's 'One Man, One Engine' philosophy. The rear seats were deleted for weight savings and a chassis cross-brace.
