Alfa Romeo GTV V6 3.0 24V Cup
The Alfa Romeo GTV Type 916, produced from 1995 to 2005, was the coupe counterpart to the Spider convertible, sharing the same platform, engines, and Pininfarina design language. The GTV was perhaps the more visually dramatic of the pair, with its fixed roof allowing for a more aggressive roofline and a more rigid structure that benefited handling.
Pininfarina's design was striking from every angle, with a muscular stance, prominent wheel arches, and a face dominated by Alfa Romeo's distinctive shield grille. The Cup version, with its unique wheels, lowered suspension, and exclusive trim, represented the most sporting expression of the GTV concept. The car looked expensive and exotic, which helped disguise its relatively humble Fiat Group platform origins.
The V6 3.0 24V engine was the heart of the enthusiast's GTV. This 2959cc V6, with its 60-degree bank angle and twin overhead camshafts, produced 220 horsepower and the glorious exhaust note that made Alfa Romeo V6 engines famous. The 24-valve head breathed freely, and the engine rewarded enthusiastic use of the rev range with increasing urgency and acoustic drama.
The Cup variant added specific 17-inch alloy wheels, lowered and stiffened suspension, enhanced brakes, and unique interior trim with deeper-bolstered seats. The result was a more focused driving experience that better suited the V6 engine's sporting character, though the fundamental front-wheel-drive layout and associated torque steer remained.
The double-wishbone front suspension was a cut above the MacPherson strut arrangements used by most front-drive competitors, providing more precise control of wheel geometry under cornering loads. Combined with the rear MacPherson strut setup and well-tuned anti-roll bars, the GTV could be driven with surprising enthusiasm on twisting roads, rewarding drivers who worked with the car's front-drive character rather than against it.
The GTV 916 is increasingly recognized as an affordable classic that delivers a quintessentially Italian driving experience. The V6 engine's character, the Pininfarina styling, and the engaging chassis provide a combination that is difficult to replicate at any price.
V6 Cup versions are most desirable. Avoid Selespeed gearbox. Check for rust in sills, wheel arches, and rear quarters. V6 engine generally reliable but cam variator issues possible. Electrical gremlins common. Front-drive torque steer present with V6 power. Service history essential. Phase 2 and 3 cars have improved build quality.
