Renault Clio Williams
The Renault Clio Williams stands as one of the most celebrated hot hatches of the 1990s, created to celebrate Renault's successful partnership with the Williams Formula 1 team. Based on the first-generation Clio, Renault Sport transformed the humble supermini by fitting the 2.0-liter F7R engine from the larger 19 16V, producing 150 hp. Crucially, the Williams featured a widened track by 55mm, requiring flared wheelarches to accommodate the wider stance and 15-inch alloy wheels. The combination of the willing naturally aspirated engine, excellent weight distribution, and sorted suspension created one of the finest-handling front-wheel-drive cars of its era. Finished in Sport Blue with gold Speedline wheels and Williams decals, the visual package was as distinctive as the driving experience. The interior featured Recaro sport seats with blue cloth inserts and Williams badging throughout. Originally intended as a limited run of 3,800 units, demand led to Series 2 and 3 versions bringing total production to approximately 12,100 cars. The Clio Williams earned legendary status through magazine comparison tests where it consistently outperformed rivals, and today commands strong values as a modern classic.
Verify it's a genuine Williams through chassis number - many standard Clios were modified to look like Williams. Check for rust in sills and rear arches. Service history is crucial as the 2.0-liter F7R engine needs regular maintenance. Timing belt replacement is critical. Look for accident damage and suspension wear. Original Recaro seats should show appropriate wear. Phase 1 models in Sport Blue are most valuable. Avoid heavily modified examples. Values are rising steadily.
Three series were produced: Phase 1 (3,800 units, 1993), Phase 2 (2,800 units, 1994), and Phase 3 (5,500 units, 1995-1996). Phase 1 is most valuable with Sport Blue paint and gold wheels. Later phases offered more color options including black and Vulcain green. All Williams models feature unique chassis numbers and Williams badging.
