Geo Metro XFi

The Geo Metro XFi represents one of the most remarkable achievements in automotive fuel efficiency. Based on the Suzuki Cultus platform and sold through Chevrolet dealers under the Geo sub-brand, the XFi was a stripped-down, efficiency-optimized version of the standard Metro. Its tiny 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine produced a modest 49 horsepower, but the car's incredibly light 1,600-pound curb weight meant it could achieve astounding fuel economy figures of 53 mpg city and 58 mpg highway — numbers that remained unmatched by any non-hybrid gasoline car for over two decades.

The XFi achieved its remarkable efficiency through several key optimizations beyond the base Metro. It featured a taller final drive ratio, reduced rolling resistance tires, a lighter clutch, and the deletion of many convenience features to keep weight to an absolute minimum. The car came only with a 5-speed manual transmission, as the automatic would have significantly hurt fuel economy.

While the XFi was dismissed as a penalty box by performance enthusiasts, it found a dedicated following among hypermilers and eco-conscious drivers. During the fuel price spikes of the 2000s and 2010s, well-maintained XFi models became surprisingly sought-after, with clean examples commanding premiums well above their original purchase price. The car's simplicity also made it remarkably reliable and easy to maintain.

Today, the Geo Metro XFi is recognized as an important milestone in automotive efficiency. Its achievement of near-60 mpg without hybrid technology, turbocharging, or advanced aerodynamics — just simple engineering and light weight — remains impressive. Surviving examples are increasingly rare, as most were simply driven until they wore out, making clean specimens genuine collectors' items.

Rust is the biggest enemy — check floor pans, rocker panels, and rear wheel arches. The 1.0L three-cylinder is remarkably durable if oil changes were regular. Manual transmission synchros may be worn. Look for original XFi-specific components like the unique final drive ratio. Check for head gasket issues. Air conditioning delete makes it a true XFi. Many have been modified or hybridized — original examples are most valuable.

The XFi was the most fuel-efficient trim of the Metro lineup. Built by CAMI Automotive (GM-Suzuki joint venture) in Ingersoll, Ontario. Based on the Suzuki Cultus/Swift platform. The Geo brand was discontinued in 1997, with the Metro continuing briefly as the Chevrolet Metro.
