Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16

Mercedes-Benz's 190E 2.3-16 represented a dramatic departure for the traditionally conservative brand, created specifically to compete in touring car racing and challenge the BMW M3. The Cosworth-developed sixteen-valve cylinder head transformed the 2.3-liter four-cylinder into a high-revving gem producing 185 horsepower. Multi-link rear suspension, limited-slip differential, and aggressive aerodynamics delivered handling to match the engine's performance. Success in DTM racing and the famous Nürburgring demonstration with Formula 1 drivers cemented the 2.3-16's legendary status as Mercedes' first modern performance sedan.

Verify engine authenticity and check for proper maintenance history. Cosworth head requires careful servicing, timing chain critical. Multi-link rear suspension complex but durable. Original examples with manual transmission most desirable. Values rising steadily as collectors recognize significance.

Developed in partnership with Cosworth to homologate for Group A racing. Initial 2.3-16 produced from 1984-1988, succeeded by 2.5-16 and Evolution models. Dog-leg five-speed manual transmission standard. Limited-slip differential standard equipment.
