Pontiac Firebird Super Duty 455

The 1974 Pontiac Firebird Super Duty 455 was an unexpected swan song for the muscle car era. At a time when most manufacturers had abandoned high-performance engines, Pontiac introduced the SD-455 with 290 SAE net horsepower and massive low-end torque. The engine featured special round-port heads, forged internals, and heavy-duty components designed for racing. Performance was remarkable for 1974, with sub-6-second 0-60 times and low-14-second quarter miles. The SD-455 came only with a 4-speed manual transmission and 3.42:1 rear axle. Instantly collectible, it represented Pontiac's final defiant gesture.

Authentication is critical as many clones exist. Verify with PHS documentation. Check for proper SD-455 engine codes and block casting numbers. Original drivetrain is essential. Many were raced hard.

Only 943 Super Duty 455 Firebirds were built in 1974, along with 212 Trans Ams with the same engine. All were documented with special paperwork from Pontiac confirming the SD-455 engine.
