Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupe

Introduced in 1969, the 280 SE 3.5 Coupe paired Mercedes' timeless W111 coupe body with the groundbreaking 3.5-liter V8 engine originally developed for the 600 limousine. The result was Mercedes' fastest and most luxurious coupe, featuring advanced Bosch fuel injection, four-wheel disc brakes, and air suspension. The pillarless hardtop design with chrome-trimmed glass and formal roofline created an elegant profile that remains one of Mercedes' most beautiful designs. Final production years like 1971-72 represent the most refined examples, with improved build quality and detail refinements before production ended to make way for the R107 SL-Class.

Verify matching numbers as engine swaps are common. Air suspension systems often need complete rebuilding - many converted to coil springs. Check for rust in door bottoms, front and rear fenders, and trunk floor. Original leather interior should be inspected carefully - restoration is extremely expensive. Verify all electrical systems function as complex wiring looms are difficult to repair. Chrome trim and bumpers should be in excellent condition as re-chroming costs are high. Service history is critical - these require dedicated specialist maintenance.

Final years of the classic W111 coupe body. Handcrafted in Sindelfingen with extensive handwork on body and trim. M116 V8 engine pioneered all-aluminum construction for Mercedes. Air suspension provided exceptional ride quality. Only 4,502 coupes built with 3.5 V8 making them significantly rarer than sedan variants.
