Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 454

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was GM's answer to the wildly successful Pontiac Grand Prix personal luxury coupe. Built on the A-body platform shared with the Chevelle, the Monte Carlo offered a longer hood, formal roofline, and an upscale interior that positioned it above the muscle car crowd. But the SS 454 option added serious performance credentials — the same LS5 and LS6 big-block V8s available in the Chevelle SS made the Monte Carlo a sleeper that could humble genuine muscle cars while looking like a gentleman's express. The first-generation Monte Carlo SS 454 is now highly collectible, particularly the 1970-1971 models. Its combination of style, comfort, and raw power represents the peak of the personal luxury performance genre.

$25,000 – $65,000

SS 454 models are the collectible ones — verify SS codes on trim tag and engine stamps. LS6 cars are extremely rare and valuable. Many non-SS cars have been cloned, so documentation is critical. Standard Monte Carlos are still affordable personal luxury cruisers. Shares most parts with the Chevelle for good parts availability.

The Monte Carlo launched for 1970 on the A-body platform. SS 454 available 1970-1971 only. The 1970 model could be ordered with the LS6 454/450hp engine. SS package discontinued after 1971 due to insurance and emissions pressures.
