Buick GSX Stage 1

The 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 stands as one of the most formidable muscle cars of the golden era, distinguished by its record-setting torque output and its bold, attention-commanding styling. While the Buick brand was not typically associated with high performance, the GSX Stage 1 shattered that perception with 360 horsepower and an astonishing 510 lb-ft of torque from its 455 cubic-inch V8 -- the highest torque figure of any muscle car of the era.

The Stage 1 engine package was the key to the GSX's devastating performance. It featured a special high-performance camshaft, larger valves, redesigned exhaust ports, and a modified Rochester Quadra-Jet four-barrel carburetor. The 510 lb-ft of torque was available at just 2800 rpm, meaning the car could accelerate with authority from any speed without downshifting. Car magazines of the era recorded quarter-mile times in the low 13-second range -- faster than many cars with significantly higher horsepower ratings.

The GSX package was a comprehensive visual and performance upgrade applied to the GS 455 coupe. The GSX added a body-color rear spoiler, front air dam, hood-mounted tachometer, specific side stripes, rear fender flares, and the choice of two exclusive colors: Apollo White or Saturn Yellow. These aggressive visual elements, combined with the wide G70-15 tires and Rally wheels, created one of the most visually striking muscle cars of the era.

The Stage 1 package was available with either the Muncie four-speed manual or the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic. Both transmissions were heavily built to handle the 455's prodigious torque. The standard rear axle was a Positraction limited-slip unit with 3.42:1 gearing, providing an excellent balance of acceleration and highway cruising ability.

The 1970 GSX was produced for one model year only, with approximately 678 GSX models produced (including both Stage 1 and non-Stage 1 variants). The Saturn Yellow cars are the most iconic and sought-after, with their bold color perfectly complementing the GSX's aggressive styling.

Today, the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 is recognized as one of the most significant and collectible muscle cars. Its combination of record-setting torque, limited production, distinctive styling, and the surprise factor of exceptional performance from a Buick has driven values to impressive levels. The GSX Stage 1 proves that the muscle car era produced greatness from every corner of Detroit.

Verify the GSX and Stage 1 options through the VIN and build sheet. The 455 Stage 1 engine should be verified through casting numbers and engine pad stampings. Many standard GS 455 models have been converted to GSX specification. Check the body for rust, particularly in the floor pans, trunk, and lower quarters. The specific GSX components (spoiler, air dam, hood tach, side stripes) should be verified as original or correct reproduction.

Built at Buick's Flint, Michigan assembly plant. Approximately 678 GSX models were produced for 1970, including both Stage 1 and non-Stage 1 variants. Only two colors were offered.
