History
Steyr-Puch 500
Steyr-Puch built the Fiat 500 under license in Austria but significantly modified the mechanicals, particularly the engine. The Austrian version featured a horizontally-opposed twin-cylinder engine instead of Fiat's inline design, providing better cooling and reliability in mountain conditions. This engine was more powerful and robust than the Italian original, making the Steyr-Puch 500 particularly popular in Alpine regions. The quality of Austrian assembly was also considered superior, with tighter tolerances and better rustproofing than contemporary Italian production.
