Wartburg 311 Camping

The Wartburg 311 Camping was specifically designed to support East Germans' enthusiasm for camping holidays, one of the few recreational activities readily accessible to citizens. The wagon body provided generous cargo space with rear seats that folded completely flat to accommodate camping gear or even serve as sleeping quarters. Built on the same front-wheel drive platform as the sedan, it offered good traction on unpaved camping sites. The model became iconic in GDR culture, representing freedom and adventure within the constraints of the socialist state.
