Oldsmobile 88 Futuramic
The 1949 Oldsmobile 88 inadvertently created the muscle car formula by installing the powerful new Rocket V8 into a relatively lightweight body. This combination produced exceptional acceleration that shocked competitors on both street and track. The modern overhead-valve design set the pattern for American V8 development for decades to come. Its success in NASCAR racing established Oldsmobile's performance reputation and inspired competitors to develop their own powerful V8 engines.
